Bully! Bully!
A medium-sized bullfrog has taken residence in our pond. He was out bellowing just a few minutes ago in the pouring rain. Welcome!

Fish Names
The 4 fantails are in the process of being named. The largest one, Bubba, has a white-tipped mouth. The smallest one is named Waldo. All names are complements of Anna.

Night Prowling
Took the flashlight out last night and lurked about. Saw a big tadpole, body about the size of my thumb with 5cm tail, either a green frog or bull frog tadpole. Saw tiny tadpoles (toadpoles?) w/ body approx 3mm with 3mm tails. Saw a dragonfly nymph. Not much else. No mosquitoes!!! Maybe because it was a cool night.

Cleaned Filter Media
Rinsed out filter media bags with pond water. Pond wasn't quite as clear in the last few days, although rain is a possible factor. Bags were filthy already, and filter pads needed rinsing.

Pond Doing Great, 4 new fantails
Algae bloom came about three weeks ago. Cleaned the filter media bags and rinsed out filters two weeks ago and pond is clear, very little green in the water. The pond is about as clear as its ever been. Lilies and lotus cover only 15-20% of surface. No chemical treatment needed so far. Added the 4 fantails from my classroom yesterday. All OK so far. Cold yesterday (45) and today (55).

Pond Cleared
Filter working well. Pond is clear to bottom of lowest shelf, about 1/2m down. Put center skimmer in. Awaiting inevitable algae bloom.
